The Metropolitan Opera - Hamlet (Thomas)

Saturday, Mar 27, 10:00 am
Sunday, Apr 4, 1:00 pm
General: $22; Seniors: $18; Students: $15 - Season Packages Available

A special Easter encore broadcast at 1:00pm of the wonderfully reviewed adaptation of Hamlet.

The works of Shakespeare have inspired more operatic adaptations than any other writer’s. Simon Keenlyside and Marlis Petersen bring their extraordinary acting and singing skills to two of the Bard’s most unforgettable characters in this new production of Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet. For the role of Ophelia, the French composer created an extended mad scene that is among the greatest in opera.

The live HD transmission is hosted by Renée Fleming, who will conduct live backstage interviews with the cast during intermission. The transmission is directed for telecast by Brian Large; Jay David Saks is audio producer.

At the opening night performance, Simon Keenlyside “embodied the character in every moment” with singing that was “elegant and wrenching, intelligent and fitful,” said The New York Times. Marlis Petersen was cited by The Times for her “beautiful and emotionally vulnerable” performance.  She takes over the role of Ophélie from Natalie Dessay, who had to withdraw from the production due to illness.

Conductor: Louis Langrée; Production: Patrice Caurier/Moshe Leiser; Marlis Peterson, Jennifer Larmore, Toby Spence, Simon Keenlyside, James Morris
