THE CHILDREN OF HUANG SHI
July 25 - 29
"The Children of Huang Shi" is based on the true story of George Hogg, a British journalist sent to China to cover a 1930s Japanese invasion. Hogg is inexperienced, naïve and reckless, yet by some miracle he survives. Bent on saving the lives of children orphaned by unbearable brutality in Nanjing, Hogg takes them on an exhausting 500-mile trek across snow-covered mountains to find refuge.
Roger Spottiswoode directs with old-fashioned style, avoiding the saccharine with realistic depictions of a war-ravaged China and a cast well versed in stiff-upper-lip. The terrific cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding photographs dust devils and bullets as carefully as the luminous face of Michelle Yeoh, whose role as an enterprising war widow adds political nuance to a determinedly apolitical script.
“The photography is awesome, especially scenes set in the Gobi Desert.” Roger Ebert
