MONGOL
August 1-5
“Mongol” is a big, ponderous epic, its beautifully composed landscape shots punctuated by thundering hooves and bloody, slow-motion battle sequences. Japanese indie idol Tadanobu Asano smolders as the maverick slave Temudgin, a man destined to become one of the greatest conquerers in history – the legendary Genghis Khan.
The film has a feeling for stunning vistas and wide-screen composition that is really something to see. Photographing in remote and scenic corners of China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan, the cinematographers offer gorgeous views of inhospitable deserts, grassy meadows and snowy steppes.
“If you like your epics sweeping and bloody and real, Mongol may be the best you get for a long while.” CinemaBlend.com
