FILM at WHITE BRANCHES: SENSE & SENSIBILITY

Tuesday, Aug 4, 6:30 pm

Doors open 6:00. Tea and scones (included in ticket price) will be served at 6:30. Films begin at 7:00.

Romance, wit, and a good cup of tea are a winning combination in this celebration of author Jane Austen on film. Austen's novels delightfully skewer the foibles of the landed gentry of the Regency era with uncommonly pointed humor, making them classics that are still enjoyed by millions today.

Join us at White Branches -- Mount Vernon's magical tearoom -- for three period-piece films based on the novels of Jane Austen. White Branches is located at 100 E Montgomery St on the second floor of Mount Vernon’s historic Old Town Grainery building.

Before each film, join us for tea! Your ticket purchase includes a pre-show freshly-baked fruit scone with vanilla glaze and cup of Creme de la Earl tea.

Other food and drinks will be available for purchase, including White Branches menu bite boxes (limited availability), wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages along with cake, popcorn, and candy.

August 4: Sense & Sensibility

When the father of Elinor Dashwood (Emma Thompson, who also wrote the script) dies, her family's finances are crippled.

After the Dashwoods move to a cottage in Devonshire, Elinor's sister Marianne (Kate Winslet) is torn between the handsome John Willoughby (Greg Wise) and the older Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman). Meanwhile, Elinor's romantic hopes with Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant) are hindered due to his prior engagement.

Both Elinor and Marianne strive for love while the circumstances in their lives constantly change.

"As ever in Jane Austen, between life's twin imperatives stretches a high wire of social comedy. The feat in filming it is how deftly the players walk it. Sense and Sensibility, adapted by Emma Thompson, is a beautifully judged bit of footwork." —Alexander Walker, London Evening Standard

Starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Hugh Laurie
