SAFEGUARDING BIG BLUE

Garbage gyres, tsunami debris, marine feedlots and ocean stewardship

Captain Charles Moore: scientist, activist and author of the acclaimed new book Plastic Ocean

A prominent seafaring environmentalist, Captain Moore shares his shocking research on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and tsunami debris soon reaching our shores. His presentation and book inspire a fundamental rethinking of the plastic age and growing crisis our blue planet faces.

Alfredo Quarto of Mangrove Action Project and Anne Mosness, organizers of Bluefestival, discuss how our appetite for shrimp and other farmed seafoods is changing coastal biodiversity, ecosystems and communities. Under the radar screen are policies promoting marine fish farms in our state and nation’s waters, potential approval of genetically engineered fish, even certification of farmed fish as “organic”.

Songwriter, humorist and activist Dana Lyons opens the evening with a set of his music.
