CENTENNIAL SILENT FILM: THE GENERAL with LIVE SCORE

Sunday, Apr 26, 6:00 pm

A hundred years ago, the Lincoln Theatre opened its doors to the public with a grand celebration of the acts that would follow: the song and dance of live vaudeville performers, cartoons, and a feature length silent film accompanied by a rollicking score played on the Mighty Wurlitzer. And 100 years later, we're bringing you a weekend full of special events that hearken back to a century ago!

The Historic Lincoln Theatre celebrates its 100th Anniversary with a special screening of Buster Keaton's masterpiece of laughs and thrills: The General, originally released the same year that the Lincoln opened!

One of the most revered comedies of the silent era,The General finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny's fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit, dexterity, and seeming disregard for his own well-being.

The silent film will feature a live musical score by Karen and the K-Kats, playing period-appropriate ragtime and trad jazz, and with a focus on the Lincoln Theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer organ -- original to the theatre, and also celebrating its centennial year.

"The film boasts the most sustained passages of virtuoso slapstick genius Keaton ever shot, and an unflagging momentum that lets it get away with being a reel longer than most of his best-known pictures." —Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph

"The Mad Max: Fury Road of its day." —Adam Kempenaar, Filmspotting
