Tales from the Silver Scream returns to the Lincoln screen!

Join us for our October Film Series: Ghost Stories!

October 1: The Uninvited

Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey star in this classic ghost story as a brother and sister who together purchase a gothic mansion overlooking the sea. The previously-abandoned house carries a low price tag, but the reason soon becomes apparent -- the property has a morbid history and the siblings discover that the mansion is haunted by its former residents.

Moody and atmospheric, The Uninvited is an early example of a Hollywood film taking the supernatural seriously, rather than comedically.

"Proceed at your own risk, we warn you, if you are at all afraid of the dark." —Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

Directed by Lewis Allen

Starring Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, Gail Russell

United States | English | 1944 | Horror, Mystery | 99 minutes | NR

October 8: House

A Japanese schoolgirl named "Gorgeous" visits her aunt's remote estate, with six of her classmates in tow. The house soon reveals itself to be possessed by a malevolent spirit, bent on devouring the girls one by one. And watch out for the cat!

Words cannot describe how deeply bonkers this film is. Populated with mostly non-professional actors and packed with wildly psychedelic special effects on a shoestring budget, House remained mostly unknown in the United States for over thirty years, before finally gaining a theatrical release in 2009 -- eventually finding itself firmly established as a cult classic.

"Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet." —Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Enquirer

Directed by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi

Starring Kimiko Ikegami, Yōko Minamida, Miki Jinbo, Kumiko Ôba, Ai Matsubara

Japan | Japanese | 1977 | Horror, Comedy | 88 minutes | NR

October 15: The Others

Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, the devoutly religious mother of two children, who suffer from a sensitivity to the sun. This affliction means that all the curtains must be drawn and all the doors locked in their sprawling manor on the English coast.

Awaiting word from her husband -- missing in action during World War II -- Grace at first doubts her children's stories of seeing ghosts. As the eerie evidence mounts and the servants deny culpability, Grace begins to suspect that there is indeed a supernatural presence at work.

"Alejandro Amenábar’s elegant chiller creates more tension from atmosphere alone than most other horror films do from vats full of fake blood." —Wendy Ide, Times UK

"Nicole Kidman is at her icy best." —Dan DiNicola, Daily Gazette

Directed by Alejandro Amenábar

Starring Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston, Fionnula Flanagan

United States | English | 2001 | Horror, Mystery | 104 minutes | PG-13

October 22: The Devil's Backbone

During the Spanish Civil War, newly-orphaned Carlos (Fernando Tielve) arrives at an orphanage in the countryside. His new home features an unexploded bomb in the courtyard and a young ghost wandering the grounds. As Carlos navigates around the chilly headmistress, kindly professor, and violent caretaker, he gradually begins to uncover the many mysteries concealed behind the orphanage's gates.

Director Guillermo del Toro's gothic horror precedes many of his other spooky tales, including Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water.

"Del Toro's elegant pacing and gothic touches imbue the proceedings with a cool mystery." —Bruce Diones, New Yorker

"Creepy and compelling and beautifully shot." —Stephen Rae, Philadelphia Enquirer

Directed by Guillermo del Toro

Starring Fernando Tielve, Marisa Paredes, Federico Luppi, Eduardo Noriega

Spain, Mexico | Spanish | 2001 | Horror, Mystery | 106 minutes | R

October 29: Ghostbusters

You've probably spent most of the year wondering who, exactly, you are going to call. Your answer is here and the time is now: it's Ghostbusters.

The OG Ghostbusters are back on the Lincoln screen! When three scientists (Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray) decide to become "ghostbusters," they stumble upon a gateway to another dimension -- a doorway that will release evil upon the city. Can the Ghostbusters save New York from complete destruction -- and a horror (almost) beyond imagination?

"Director Ivan Reitman keeps the Aykroyd-Ramis screenplay zipping right along, creating something like Abbott & Costello Meet the Exorcist. Aykroyd and Murray make the perfect summer tonic for raising spirits." —Peter Travers, People Magazine

Directed by Ivan Reitman

Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigouney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts

United States | English | 1984 | Horror, Comedy | 105 minutes | PG
