January 7: How to Marry a Millionaire

Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable star as three women on a mission: they all want to marry a millionaire!

To accomplish this task, they move into a fancy New York City apartment -- rather beyond their means -- and begin courting the city's elite. They have no problem meeting rich men, but unfortunately most of them turn out to be creeps or cons. Eventually they must decide: Is a life of luxury more important to them than finding true love?

"Fabulously cast and wickedly witty." —Tony Sloman, Radio Times

Directed by Jean Negulesco

Starring Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, Rory Calhoun, William Powell

United States | English | 1953 | Comedy, Romance | 95 minutes | Approved

January 14: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe stars as Lorelei Lee, a showgirl engaged to a naive, wealthy fellow (Tommy Noonan) whose even wealthier father suspects Lorelei of being a gold-digger after his fortune.

When Lorelei and her best friend Dorothy (Jane Russell) head to sea on a cruise to Paris, they're shadowed by a private eye (Elliott Reid) who's been hired by the father to report on Lorelei's behavior -- and, boy, with all the admirers that the gals collect, he'll be busy for sure!

Marilyn's rendition of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" -- and her pink dress -- is an absolute show-stopper of a musical number.

"The Monroe-Russell combination smashes over the comedy in no uncertain terms." —Mildred Martin, Philadelphia Inquirer

Directed by Howard Hawks

Starring Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Tommy Noonan, Elliott Reid

United States | English | 1953 | Comedy, Musical, Romance | 91 minutes | Approved

January 21: The Seven Year Itch

Marilyn Monroe stars as "the Girl" -- a gorgeous model sub-leasing an apartment upstairs from publishing executive Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell).

In the midst of a sweltering heat wave, Sherman ships his wife and son off for a vacation. Always faithful, Sherman begins to fantasize about his new neighbor -- but when he invites her to spend some time in his air-conditioned home, does reality have any way to measure up to his imagination?

Everyone is familiar with that image of Marilyn, standing on the subway grate, white skirt blowing upward -- this is the movie that it's from!

"Laughs come thick and fast." —Variety

Directed by Billy Wilder

Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tommy Ewell

United States | English | 1955 | Comedy, Romance | 105 minutes | Approved

January 28: Some Like It Hot

After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy Jerry (Jack Lemmon) improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago with their lives: disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida.

While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band's sexy singer, Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire (Joe E. Brown) as things heat up and the mobsters close in.

Not only one of Marilyn's best films, Some Like It Hot lays claim as one of the best comedies ever made -- also, it has arguably the greatest final line of dialogue in cinema history!

"If Billy Wilder achieved nothing else in his entire career, he would still rank as one of the great masters of cinema for pulling off this comic tour de force." —Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle

Directed by Billy Wilder

Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, George Raft

United States | English | 1959 | Comedy, Romance | 121 minutes | Approved
