Join us Tuesdays in September for our new film series: Three Thin Men.
William Powell and Myrna Loy -- a pairing so popular with the public that they appeared in 14 films together -- star as Nick and Nora Charles in the Thin Man film series, a delightful mélange of marriage, mirth, and murder.
Nick's a perpetually-sloshed former private detective who frequently proclaims his reluctance to get back in the game; Nora is his socialite wife who loves the thrill of solving mysteries, much to Nick's consternation. (And don't forget Asta, their scene-stealing wire fox terrier!)
A total of six Thin Man films were made, and we'll be watching the first three; the three with the original creative team attached, maintaining the high quality which flagged with the later entries.
W.S. Van Dyke, a dependable stalwart of the early sound era, directs. The screenplays are by the married couple Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, whose witty and urbane style shaped the films to focus on the Charles' delightful banter.
Finally, Dashiell Hammett wrote the original The Thin Man novel and provided stories and structure for the two films that follow. Hammett is one of the foundational figures of modern crime fiction -- his stories, including The Maltese Falcon, essentially invented the "hard-boiled detective."
Together, these elements create the perfect alchemy of crime, comedy, and sophistication that defines the Thin Man series -- and influenced Hollywood genre-bending for decades to come.
September 9: The Thin Man
Former detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora investigate a murder case, mostly for the fun of it.

Anxious to locate her father, Wynant's daughter (Maureen O'Sullivan) goes to private detective Nick Charles (William Powell) and his wife Nora (Myrna Loy) for help.

As the duo search for the disreputable Robert, Selma's friend David Graham (James Stewart), who secretly pines for her, aids the investigation.
