96TH ANNIVERSARY SILENT FILM: SHERLOCK JR.

Saturday, Apr 23, 3:00 pm

The Historic Lincoln Theatre celebrates its 96th Anniversary with a special screening of Buster Keaton's silent film masterpiece, Sherlock Jr.for a special 1926 opening night price of thirty-five cents!

A kindly movie projectionist (Buster Keaton) longs to be a detective. When his fiancée (Kathryn McGuire) is robbed by a local thief (Ward Crane), the poor projectionist is framed for the crime. Using his amateur detective skills, the projectionist follows the thief to the train station -- only to find himself locked in a train car. Disheartened, he returns to his movie theater, where he falls asleep and dreams that he is the great Sherlock Holmes.

In 1991, Sherlock Jr. was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In 2000, the American Film Institute, as part of its AFI 100 Years... series, ranked the film #62 in its list of the funniest films of all time (AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs).

"A master of movement and stillness, Keaton developed a comedy style that was as intellectual as it was physical, and this small gem shows us why he's as purely American a film genius as the motion pictures have produced.- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.

The Silent Film Screening will be accompanied on the Mighty Wurlitzer by Harvey Rossiter

Fred Beeks and Katie Moyer will open the show!

We'll wrap up the evening with Birthday Cake and refreshments.
