Join us Tuesdays in April for our new film series: JIMMY STEWART IN THE WEST.

Actor James Stewart and director Anthony Mann made eight films together, including the four Westerns that we're showing this month. These films marked a surprising shift in Stewart's on-screen persona -- from affable everyman to a morally complex antihero. Stewart and Mann's collaborations, known for their psychological depth and gorgeous location cinematography, pushed the genre toward a grittier and more realistic tone than earlier Westerns -- while influencing Westerns still to come.

April 8: Winchester '73

Lin McAdam (James Stewart) pursues notorious outlaw Henry Dutch Brown (Stephen McNally) into Dodge City, Kansas. There, in an effort to flush out the criminal, McAdam enters a sharp-shooting contest and wins the top prize: the eponymous Winchester rifle.

When Brown steals the rifle and flees town, McAdam chases Brown across the state and toward an epic confrontation.

"Anthony Mann and James Stewart’s first collaboration is a touchstone of the western genre." —Jake Cole, Slant Magazine

"The final shoot-out remains a classic study in mise-en-scène, as Mann transforms a jagged landscape into a highly charged psychological battleground." —Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

Directed by Anthony Mann

Starring James Stewart, Stephen McNally, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea, Rock Hudson

United States | English | 1950 | Western | 92 minutes | Approved

April 15: Bend of the River

Glyn McLyntock (James Stewart), a reformed outlaw with a mysterious past, has become a guide for farmers headed to Oregon. When he rescues thief Emerson Cole (Arthur Kennedy) from execution, Cole joins him on the journey.

Once the settlers arrive, they discover that a trader who was supposed to send them provisions is now trying to scam them. After McLyntock and Cole travel to Portland to forcibly retrieve the supplies, the goods are stolen, and McLyntock must fight for his life while trying to keep the settlers from starving to death over the winter.

"As usual for a Mann picture, there are many wordless sequences of purely visual storytelling, a quality that makes Anthony Mann one of the greatest yet least recognized American directors."  —Jeremy Arnold, Turner Classic Movies

Directed by Anthony Mann

Starring James Stewart, Julia Adams, Rock Hudson, Arthur Kennedy, Lincoln Perry

United States | English | 1952 | Western | 91 minutes | Approved

April 22: The Naked Spur

Howard Kemp (James Stewart) has been tracking killer Ben Vandergroat (Robert Ryan) for a long time. In the Colorado Rockies, Kemp teams up with prospector Jesse Tate (Millard Mitchell) and former Union soldier Roy Anderson (Ralph Meeker). Thinking Kemp is a sheriff, they agree to help for a small fee.

When they catch Vandergroat -- and his companion Lina Patch (Janet Leigh) -- the fugitive tells them that Kemp is actually a bounty hunter pursuing a $5,000 reward. After demanding equal shares, the uneasy alliance heads for Kansas as Vandergroat tries to turn them against each other.

"This 1953 film has Janet Leigh in jeans, beautiful location shooting (and Technicolor cinematography) in the Rockies, and some of the most intense psychological warfare to be found in Mann's angular and anguished oeuvre." —Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

Directed by Anthony Mann

Starring James Stewart, Janet Leigh, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker

United States | English | 1953 | Western | 91 minutes | Approved

April 29: The Far Country

At the height of the Yukon Gold Rush, cowboy Jeff Webster (James Stewart) and his partner, Ben Tatum (Walter Brennan), want in on the action. They decide to drive their cattle from Wyoming to Yukon, alongside businesswoman Ronda Castle (Ruth Roman).

Along their journey, the two run afoul of the crooked and sadistic Skagway lawman Gannon (John McIntire), who vows revenge when they escape him. After traveling through all manner of terrain, Webster and Tatum finally arrive at their destination. But Gannon has business in the town as well -- and he intends to make good on his promise.

"Rugged action is featured in The Far Country to go with its rugged outdoor scenery, and the results add up to film entertainment."Variety

United States | English | 1954 | Western | 97 minutes | Approved
