October 22: The Devil's Backbone
During the Spanish Civil War, newly-orphaned Carlos (Fernando Tielve) arrives at an orphanage in the countryside. His new home features an unexploded bomb in the courtyard and a young ghost wandering the grounds. As Carlos navigates around the chilly headmistress, kindly professor, and violent caretaker, he gradually begins to uncover the many mysteries concealed behind the orphanage's gates.
Director Guillermo del Toro's gothic horror precedes many of his other spooky tales, including Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water.
"Del Toro's elegant pacing and gothic touches imbue the proceedings with a cool mystery." —Bruce Diones, New Yorker
