On the first four Tuesdays in August, please join us at the Lincoln Theatre for our Lincoln Film Series: Shirley, You Jest!
Shirley MacLaine is a shining star in these four classic comedies, spotlighting her career from her film debut to her rise into sparkling stardom. Her comic chops are on full display, ranging from aching melancholy to manic zaniness.
Check out this lineup:
August 1: The Trouble With Harry
Director Alfred Hitchcock is in fine form in this morbid lark -- one of the rare comedies from the director of Psycho and Vertigo.
When a dead body -- the titular Harry -- turns up on the outskirts of a small town, nobody knows quite what to do about it. Who was he? Who killed him? And most important, what should we do with the corpse so that we can all just move on with our lives? In short -- what's The Trouble With Harry?
Young ingenue Shirley MacLaine makes her film debut as the village beauty, catching the eye of John Forsythe's charming artist.
United States | English | 1955 | Comedy, Mystery, Romance | 99 minutes | PG
August 8: The Apartment
Writer/director Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard) turns in perhaps his best film -- and that's a high bar! -- with The Apartment.
Jack Lemmon stars as hapless nebbish C.C. Baxter, an insurance clerk looking to rise through the ranks of his firm -- by taking a shortcut to the top, lending his apartment to the bosses for illicit trysts. When he falls for the company's elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacClaine), he finds that his plan has...well, it has its ups and downs, plan-wise.
Winner of five Oscars, including Best Picture, The Apartment is a sublime mix of hilarity and sadness.
United States | English | 1960 | Comedy, Drama | 125 minutes | NR (PG equivalent)
August 15: What a Way to Go!
Shirley MacLaine sets the zany dial all the way to the top, in the sumptuously colorful What a Way to Go!
Louisa May Foster (MacLaine) loves being in love -- and it's certainly not her fault that her husbands keep dying! At the end of her rope, she spills her story to psychologist Dr. Stephanson (Bob Cummings), and the tale unfolds as Shirley's outfits (designed by Edith Head) become ever more luxurious.
The supporting cast is frankly astounding: Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dick Van Dyke, Dean Martin, and Gene Kelly all put in appearances. Can one of them offer Louisa May the true happiness that she deserves?
United States | English | 1964 | Comedy, Romance | 111 minutes | NR (PG equivalent)
August 22: Gambit
Michael Caine joins Shirley MacLaine in the lighthearted cat-and-mouse caper Gambit.
Talented thief Harry Dean (Caine) has his eyes on the prize: a priceless statue with a strong resemblance to a showgirl named Nicole Chang (MacLaine). Harry thinks his plan is flawless -- but will Nicole play along?
As the film's tagline states: "Go Ahead: Tell the End (It's Too Hilarious to Keep Secret) But Please Don't Tell the Beginning!"
United States | English | 1966 | Comedy, Thriller | 109 minutes | NR (PG equivalent)
