August 8: The Apartment

Writer/director Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard) turns in perhaps his best film -- and that's a high bar! -- with The Apartment.

Jack Lemmon stars as hapless nebbish C.C. Baxter, an insurance clerk looking to rise through the ranks of his firm -- by taking a shortcut to the top, lending his apartment to the bosses for illicit trysts. When he falls for the company's elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacClaine), he finds that his plan has...well, it has its ups and downs, plan-wise.

Winner of five Oscars, including Best Picture, The Apartment is a sublime mix of hilarity and sadness.
